“Boris Johnson is ahead of Ken Livingstone on votes counted so far in the London mayoral contest.
Figures released by the organisers, London Elects, show that after 40% of ballots were counted, Johnson, the Tory candidate, was ahead in nine of the 14 constituencies in the capital.
Labour’s Livingstone was ahead in five, with Lib Dem Brian Paddick in third in every case.
The Conservatives are now privately very confident that Johnson, the Henley MP whose candidature was initially dismissed as a joke when it was announced last year, will beat Livingstone.
London Elects said the turnout of around 45% was the highest for a mayoral election. It is around a fifth more than the 37% who voted in 2004, and means 2.4m of London’s 5.4m registered voters took part.”
