Not sure what I can say to this?

“The Labour party lags the Conservatives by 18 percentage points, the biggest margin since Margaret Thatcher’s heyday 21 years ago, an opinion poll showed.

The YouGov poll, published by the Daily Telegraph on its website on Thursday, showed Labour garnering 26 percent of the vote, with the Conservative party on 44 and the Liberal Democrats on 17.

Local elections next Thursday will be the first electoral test for Labour under Prime Minister Gordon Brown whose popularity has been damaged by a series of crises.

The opinion poll was conducted in the first three days of this week, meaning it took into account a threatened revolt by dozens of Labour members of parliament over the government’s plans to scrap the lowest band of income tax.

Brown rowed back on the plan on Wednesday.

The Telegraph said the Conservatives’ lead over Labour was the largest since Conservative Prime Minister Thatcher was in power in 1987.

Brown took over from Tony Blair in June and has struggled to show effective leadership on major policies, especially in the face of the credit crisis.

A strike by teachers, coastguard workers and other public sector employees on Thursday — with an estimated 100,000 to 400,000 people joining in — has further undermined his standing.

Brown served for 10 years under Blair as Chancellor, earning a reputation as a strong, steady hand at the tiller, but he has struggled to transfer that authority into the top job.

He does not have to call a parliamentary election until the spring of 2010, and he now looks likely to hold off as long as possible in the hope his party’s fortunes can be revived.”
